Is your child ready
to learn about letter sounds?
Children differ widely in their levels of interest and readiness for learning of every sort. A small percentage of children are eager to learn letter sounds quite early, to begin putting words together, and may start the reading process within a very short time. Most, however, become interested in letter-sound relationships around three-and-a-half or four. Some are not interested until much later.
If your child is not the least interested in letter sounds, preferring to engage in active play and being out of doors, insisting that he sit still and concentrate on something which is not yet meaningful to him will, in the end, be counterproductive. He may resist learning and look for ways to avoid it -- exactly what you don't want.
Make sure your preschool son or daughter shows a degree of eagerness to learn about letter sounds. One positive sign of readiness -- "Can we read Abadaba again?"
